Wood Posts : Post-and-Rail Fencing

    Our doweled post & rail fencing is largely produced out of Pine and Fir logs. These logs are the tops of trees from large timber operations; tops considered too small to produce lumber. They are run through the dowel machine [see video] to produce posts & rails that are uniform in diameter from tip to butt and as such have a nicer, smoother appearance than the peeled posts.

    The standard setup includes the posts being chamfered at the top and 2-1/8" size holes drilled into the face of the posts for either 2-rail or 3-rail fence systems. Standard hole spacing is that the 1st hole is drilled 6" on-center from the top of the post, subsequently the 2nd and/or 3rd holes are drilled 15" on-center from the center of the first hole. We supply the line posts, corner posts, and end posts. All of the rails are tenoned at the ends to 2" so they are easy to install. Our ability to do special orders (such as, 2-5/8" hole sizing, special hole spacing, or 2-1/2" tenons on 3-1/2" and 4" rails) is pretty limited at this time. We hope to be able to quote those kinds of projects again in the future.

    Since post & rail fencing is largely used in residential applications, we treat it with CA-C (Copper Azole - Type C) to a .15 pcf (per cubic foot) retention level for ground contact use. It is the recommended treatment because it provides the same level of performance as CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) pressure treated wood without the use of arsenic and chromium.
